Texas Electricity

Market Overview

texasThe Texas electric choice market opened for consumers and businesses in January 2002. As with other states implementing electric deregulation, the transmission and distribution utilities are responsible for delivering electricity. Competitive suppliers, also known as Retail Electric Providers (REPs), are responsible for supplying electricity. Unlike other states, there is not a utility default or standard service rate available. Every customer in an area open to electric choice must select a REP in order to receive service. Electricity delivery charges and service are the same regardless of which REP you choose.
Finding a great electricity rate in Texas is an easy process. On your current bill statement, locate your service address and the Electricity Service Identifier ID (ESI ID). The REP will request one or both of these items to complete the secure enrollment and switch the electric service at your home or business.

REPs offer Texas consumers a wide variety of electricity plans from which to choose. There are month-to-month variable rate plans, prepaid plans, fixed rate plans, and time-of-use plans available. There are also renewable energy plans and plans that include value-added products like smart thermostats. No other state electric choice market offers such a broad array of plans and services.

Electric Utilities in Texas

If your home or business is served by one of the seven utilities open to electric choice, you have the freedom to shop for competitive electricity rates. The utilities open to retail electric completion are:

  • Oncor
  • CenterPoint
  • AEP Texas Central
  • APE Texas North
  • TNMP
  • Sharyland
  • Nueces Electric Cooperative

ElectricityMatch does not have any competitive offers available in the Nueces Electric Cooperative service area. The utilities are still responsible for the safe and reliable delivery of electricity to your home or business. Their quality of service does not depend on which REP you choose. The Public Utility Commission of Texas licenses REPs and regulates electric utilities.
