Critics say they have been too slow to upgrade the grid, leading to blackouts during extreme weather conditions. Others argue that the moves to deregulate the Texas electricity market have led to higher prices and less competition.

No matter what side of the debate you’re on, there’s no denying that ERCOT is a crucial part of the Texas electricity landscape.

What Is ERCOT?

ERCOT is the Electric Reliability Council of Texas. It is a nonprofit corporation that administers and manages the electricity grid in Texas. This covers most of the state’s 254 counties. ERCOT ensures that Texans have reliable power by coordinating electricity supply and demand across 87,000 transmission lines. It also works with other stakeholders, such as generators, retail electric providers (REPs), and consumers, to ensure the secure delivery of electricity.

How Does ERCOT Operate?

ERCOT manages the flow of electric power to more than 26 million Texas customers – representing about 90 percent of the state’s electric load. As the state’s electric grid operator, ERCOT schedules power on an electric system that includes almost 12,500 miles of transmission lines and more than 550 generation units. Most Texas power plants are connected to the ERCOT system.  This system stretches from the Panhandle in the north to border areas in the south and from the Dallas-Fort Worth area in the east to El Paso in the west. ERCOT is a membership-based 501(c)(4) nonprofit corporation governed by a board of directors and subject to oversight by the Public Utility Commission of Texas (PUC) and the Texas Legislature. This include investors, generators and transmission owners, wholesale and retail electric providers, educators, and others interested in a reliable and economical electric grid. Together we work to ensure Texans have the electricity they need when they need it.
